On this day in 1913 the Michigan Central Station was rushed into service with the first train car departing at 5:20 p.m.

The station, which officials planned to open several months later in 1914, opened Dec. 26, 1913, after a fire at the Michigan Central Railroad, at Third Street and Jefferson Avenue, forced an early closure.

I won’t editorialize on the station when so many others have already said so much. Instead, I will leave you with a very succinct quote from the Detroit Free Press’ Jeff Gerritt:

“Maybe we need this rotting relic to remind us how far we have fallen, and how far we must travel together.”

Happy birthday, you big ole beleaguered behemoth, you.
